Purchase Details

The land bought comprises of a half-share of the ancient burial Isle of Eilean Munde, traditional burial place of the MacDonalds of Glencoe, also Camerons, MacInnes' and MacIntyres, along with other named clans people; 100 acres of Crofters Common Grazings, including the old Corn Mill; the largest stretch of the River Coe with attractive woodlands containing some of the oldest Beech trees in Scotland.

These lands were formerly part of the old Glencoe Estate, which were owned by a succession of McDonald Chiefs, from the chief slain in the 1692 Massacre down to his direct descendant Archibald Burns McDonald, who sold the lands to Lord Strathcona in 1894.

Unlike other land buy-outs, no government funding was accessed for this land - the cost of which was in the region of just over £105,000 pounds.

Mr MacDonald secured funding of temporary unsecured loans in an eleventh hour bid to safeguard the land. He did this to ensure that the wildlife and scenic areas of Glencoe are safeguarded for future generations to enjoy.

To date the amount still owing is £46,000.
However greater support is required to safeguard this most scenic area of Glencoe.

The large area of Crofters' Common Grazings situated on the Pap of Glencoe contains ancient oak trees. Red deer stags also 'winter' here, and Roe deer, foxes, buzzards, and many attractive wild flowers are also to be found.
