Fundraising and Support

Amount now owing £46,000


Since the summer of 2002, the GHT immediately embarked on a host of fundraising activities, starting with a Tea Day which raised £600. This was followed in October by the re-instatement of the traditional Halloween party which was attended by 50 children and a raffle raised £100.

Christmas 2002:
It was decided by the trust to distribute logs to the Senior Citizens of the village, and although this was not a fundraising event, it was well received by the seniors.

February 2003:
The trust held a "Ladies Night" demonstrating Beauty products which raised £100.

April 2003:
The 1st Battalion Scots Guards Pipe Band marched through Glencoe Village in support of the GHT appeal. £600 was raised on the day, the founding member of the GHT being an ex Scots Guardsman.

July 2003:
At short notice it was decided to hold a flower show in the village and on the 31st August the inaugural Glencoe & District Flower Show was held, which proved to be a great success raising £600. Many high class exhibits were on show, and by popular demand it will become an annual event.

October 2003:
The second Halloween party was held with 60 children attending from surrounding villages, a raffle raised £100.

January 2004:
A 2 day Sale was held, when members of the local community gave items of clothes, furniture, books, baking, bric-a-brac etc, to be sold for the appeal; £800 was raised.

April 2004:
A sale of baking and books for Flower Show Funds was held which raised £316, to be used for trophy engraving, hire of hall, printing of schedules, etc.

May 2004:
The secretary was invited to attend the first Celebration of Celts, held at Chatham County, New York. This visit resulted in £200 being raised with much interest being shown towards the work of the GHT from our USA hosts.

July 2004:
A Strawberry Tea held in the village raised £150; also a visit to the Arisaig Games at the end of July raised £120.

August 2004:
The second flower show was held which raised £500.

October 2004:
Founding member, Alistair MacDonald was invited by the Dundee & Angus branch of the Scots Guards Association to attend their annual dinner at Forfar, the event raised £220 with a further donation of £500 from a single donor.

October 2004:
The annual Halloween Party was attended by almost 100 children, with the village hall packed to capacity. A raffle raised £200.

May 2005:
A two-day exhibition of old photographs of the Glencoe area was held. Members of the local community loaned many of their archive pictures and much interest was shown. Glencoe Primary School pupils attended, and there was a surprise visit from local MP Charles Kennedy, who attended with his family. The event raised £600 towards the appeal, with many visitors returning on the second day.

June 2005:
The Clan Donald Chief's Tour gathering in Glencoe. Members of the GHT were invited to lunch with the visiting clansmen and women; the GHT organized a boat trip to Eilean Munde, the burial isle, which the visitors appreciated very much.

July 2005:
Representatives of the trust attended the Arisaig games as guests of ClanRanald. This proved to be a most enjoyable day, with items of interest on show about the work of the Heritage Trust, and promotion of Glencoe.

August 2005:
After many months of planning & preparation, the third annual flower show took place. This year saw a large increase in the number of exhibitors taking part, with an increase of visitors to the show. Among the number of trophies sponsored by local businesses this year was a much admired targe presented by Mrs Jean Henderson of Skye in memory of the Hendersons of Glencoe, for the winner of the children's section, which was won by Helen Nelson.

October 2005:
The Halloween Party was once again a popular event, when seventy 'witches', ghosts, fairies & devils etc turned up to play games, dance and have fun. A small raffle raised £150 for the appeal.

February 2006:
The annual ceremony, held to commemorate the clans people who were massacred in 1692 was attended by M/s Linda MacDonald Lewis, Oregon, USA. Linda also attended the Scottish Parliament, where her poems on William Wallace were warmly received. The Glencoe Heritage Trust has benefited both financially and culturally from M/s MacDonald Lewis.

April 2006:
Mrs Mary MacArthur (nee MacInnes), Glencoe, celebrated her 90th birthday with a group of family and friends; Mrs MacArthur asked that instead of receiving gifts, donations should be made to the GHT, with the sum of £225 being raised for the trust.

June 2006:
Clan MacInnes invited members of the Trust to attend the unfurling of the MacInnes Banner at Kinlochaline Castle, and after a visit to see the mediaeval tombstones at Keil churchyard, the Banner was unfurled from the ramparts of the castle. July 2006:
The yearly strimming of Eilean Munde, the burial isle, was carried out by J&J McKirdy with the help of volunteer David Doogan.

Also in July a group of volunteers from Pembrokeshire and Carmarthen, under the leadership of Dave Sommerville, working for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, took part in a beach clean-up on land owned by the GHT on the shores of Loch Leven, which proved to be a very worthwhile exercise from the dedicated team.

Shore Cleanup

August 2006:
The 4th Annual Flower Show attracted more trophies from local businesses. A new sound system was acquired, which greatly enhanced the Prize giving and Raffle announcements, with the overall number of exhibits being of a very high standard.

October 2006:
Around 70 children attended the fancy dress Halloween party, with a dedicated team supplying the food, decorating the hall, providing music and judging the winners, £100 was raised on the night.

November 2006:
The main bench at the massacre memorial was renewed recently by Mike Hall, Glencoe, for the Glencoe Heritage Trust.

December 2006:
One of the ancient beech trees was blown down in a storm after days of torrential rain and wind.





Due to the enormous size and age of the trees, it was agreed to seek expert advice from a tree specialist on the remaining trees.

The advice given was that some of the remaining trees were in danger of coming down in high winds and a plan of action was implemented, mainly to protect the safety of the public. The wood from the fallen timber was cut into logs and distributed to the local people.

February 2007:
The secretary was injured after a fall, which curtailed fundraising activities for some months.

June 2007:
It was decided to create a 2008 Calendar with pictures of ‘Old Glencoe’ to be sold for appeal funds, and in July the calendar was ready for distribution and was publicised in the press.

August 2007:
The fifth annual Flower show was held in the village hall, and proved to be the most successful show to date.

October 2007:
The annual Halloween Party was held in the village hall when 70 children attended, £200 was raised for the appeal.

November 2007:
Demand for the Calendar was high and was a complete sell-out, with many copies being distributed overseas, with all proceeds going towards the appeal fund.
